Author’s Take: Linking intranasal Group A Streptococcus infection to CNS complications

Dr. Patrick Cleary, from the University of Minnesota and Dr. Dritan Agalliu, from Columbia University, discuss their collaboration investigating the link between Group A Streptococcus -specific Th17 cells and CNS autoimmunity.

Cleary and colleagues found that “multiple intranasal GAS (Group A Streptococcus) challenges in mice promotes migration and persistence of GAS-specific Th17 cells to the brain, leading to blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown and autoantibody access to the CNS.”
